Help with English:
If you do not meet our English language requirements, you can begin your university academic program while completing your English language requirements in our Foundation program.

Transfer-ability:
If we do not have the program you want, you can still begin your studies at UFV and then transfer to another BC university with full credit (BC Transfer system).

UFV ESL Program:

UFV offers:

six  levels of English instruction ranging from beginner to pre-university

year-round 2 and 4 month semesters for maximum flexibility

academic and cultural orientation combined with language instruction

if you are an advanced student, you may enroll in combined ESL and university courses (Foundation Program) and receive university credit while completing your language requirement

community immersion activities and modern language laboratory

Foundation Program Level 1 & 2 (ESL Level 7 & 8) 
If you have an IE LTS of 5.0 (or another standardized international test of English proficiency) or better, you can be conditionally accepted into an academic program and begin your university studies while completing your English requirements in the Foundation program
level 1 and 2.

English Requirements:

As English is the language of instruction at UFV, all applicants, regardless of first language or citizenship status must demonstrate English language competency prior to admission into academic programs. Students can demonstrate that they have met the language requirement in any of the following ways:

IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6.0

TOEFL computer-based min score of 230 plus essay score of 4.0

TOEFL IBT min score of 88

TOEFL paper-based min score of 570 plus min TWE score of 4.0

Accuplacer Reading Comprehension score of 80 or better,

4-month semester: $5, 400

Application fee: $150

Ancillary fees (4-month semester): $250

Ancillary fees (2-month semester): $125

Medical premiums: $65/month

Extended Health & Dental (SUS): $160/year

Residence Fees (2 semesters): $7, 020

How & when should I apply

You are advised to apply early as many programs have a limited number of seats. Late applications will be accepted for ESL programs if space is available.


1. Complete the International Student Application for Admission form. Please print neatly in block letters. Incomplete, illegible, or late application forms will not be processed.

2. Choose the program to which you are applying from the Programs page. Please choose only one program.

3. Then mail the following:

a) Completed application form
b) A non-refundable application fee of CDN$150
c) Official transcripts from high school, and college or university if attended. These must be in English and, if translated, must be certified
d) One passport-size photograph
e) Test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, LPI) scores (if available) if applying for direct entry into any program other than ESL(UFV's  TOEFL code is 9736)
f) A 100 - 200 word letter explaining why you wish to study
